However, it would be better if detailed discussion on this topic would be addressed by NDT / Repair Experts. As far as characterizing waterproofing treatments, it can be done by tests such as absorption, water penetration under pressure (DIN 1048) and so on. Most of these test methods can easily be done in India, by leading test houses."

General Awareness

According to Mr. Surlaker, the level of awareness on waterproofing systems is on the lower side. He says, "The end users are confused about innumerable materials in the market with marketing stories rather than empirically tested values. With that regards, awareness needs to be increased by seminars and training programs in a neutral forum. Further, we need to pay attention to basic civil engineering principles for an effective waterproofing system. Like in all other areas of life, there are no quick fixes in waterproofing; it has to be a meticulously designed system incorporating several barriers to water entering the structure. Construction detailing and inputs from the constructors will be a key factor of success here. Finally, there is an urgent need to switch over to performance specifications rather than prescriptive ones."

Further he comments, "Applicator skill is another area to be remedied. There can be an external agency to take up this task. For the constructors and end users, this would be beneficial as the applicators would be certified to execute selected waterproofing jobs with a set system of products and the end users know exactly what to expect from the executed waterproofing system. Good products are nothing without good applicators and vice-versa. All three components of materials, manpower and machinery have to work in harmony to provide successful waterproofing."
